To finish these off so to speak, I used Rust-oleum Hammered Black enamel paint and sprayed it on with the ol’ Wagner. I love this stuff, it looks better in person. They also make this stuff in spray cans if you would like to go that route. The paint comes out glossy, but has a heavy orange peel look with a gray metallic in it as well. In a well lit area this paint has a dark charcoal gray look, very cool.

This is the final result. I still need to make some grills to keep my two year old's fingers at bay.

Below is the completed project with covers I made to keep little probing fingers out.

Well, every speaker-building write-up compares their speaker to some mass produced speaker worth hundreds or thousands of dollars more, so here’s my take on the Dayton 8s. I don’t have the ability to compare these directly with other name brands nor do I have a bunch of analyzing equipment, but I am very happy regardless of how they compare. First of all, my subwoofer is now sitting in the garage. I turned on the surround sound and threw in a good movie, then tested out some rockin’ Jazz. They sound like they look. With my old speakers I could hear the music come from each speaker, now my living room is emanating with sound that floats back and forth across the room. Are these the best speakers you build/buy? Absolutely not. For $250 start to finish and taking into account the sound, I haven’t seen anything close. That last statement leads you to believe that the sound quality is based on the price, not so. I almost decided to just buy a set at the local electronics store because I didn't want to spend all that money and end up with a pile of junk. In all honensty I listened to some speakers at that store that were name brand and cost several hundred a piece and the Dayton 8s would easily compare. Having said all that I would like to thank Dave and Wayne J. for making this project possible for me. Without their prior efforts on this design I would still be out in the garage pulling out what hair I have left.
